Description:
Ginger is a perennial herbaceous plant with annual pseudo stems. The plant has many fibrous roots with aerial shoot (pseudo steams). After the plantation, many fibrous roots with indefinite growth property grow out of the sprouts. It produces cluster of white and pink flower buds that later on grow into yellow flowers. It is also used as landscaping around subtropical homes. Ginger is pseudo stem modified for vegetative propagation and storage of food materials.

Ginger is among the earliest recorded species to be cultivated and it is one of the profitable item to be grown in your firm. There are several methods of growing ginger commercially and non commercially. But, it not easy to cultivate. Many factors like climate, soil, temperature, sunlight etc. are to be taken care of.


Ginger cultivation

Climate and Soil:

Ginger grows in hot and humid climate from sea level to the altitude of 1500 m above the sea level. The place should have the access of direct sunlight for 4-5 hours a day. The temperature required is 28-35 degree Celsius. For a successful cultivation moderate rainfall is necessary.

Plantation:

Ginger grows by vegetative propagation of the rhizomes. The rhizomes are cut into pieces with 1/2 buds and are dug into the soil for the plantation.

Manure:

A well decomposed cattle manure or compost manure is used at the time of plantation. After the 40 days and 90 days of plantation, Nitrogen fertilizers are used.

Mulching:

For Ginger, mulching is necessary and is done with the green leaves to conserve the soil moisture, and improve the physical properties. It is done at the time of plantation, 40 days after plantation and 3 months after the plantation.

Harvesting and Curing:

Harvesting is done after 6 months of plantation. First the rhizomes are soaked in water and then cleaned the other day.
